For the last few years, not as much recently with economic downturns, Bernedoodle litters were spoken for months or even years before they were even born, or really even before the mama was due for pups by many Bernedoodle Breeders. Let me say, there is absolutely nothing wrong or unethical about this method - and many reputable breeders do have paid wait lists and take deposits on pups well ahead of their birth or conception. We here at Cobblestone Bernedoodles do not use this method for a variety of reasons, of which I will go into briefly.
Our main reason is the unpredictability of breeding and the unknowns that come with it. We know about when our mama will be ready for breeding and then can say when pups will be born. We do not know how many we will have, if they will be males, females, or what the markings are until that pup is born and in our hands! Even with modern technology of ultrasounds and things like that, the results can be inaccurate as to number of puppies in the womb. We've had it told to us both ways - overestimated and underestimated, because technology is great, but it’s also not perfect!
Because of the unknowns, we do not like taking deposits from people that may or may not get a puppy with the litter they want, because we really are just “waiting to see”, sort of like Christmas morning and that’s what it feels like to us - Christmas morning! The idea that we are tying up hopes and dreams of a beautiful puppy that may or may not be fulfilled for months or years is really not something I want to have on my mind. Especially when kids are involved!
Also, it seems very complicated to me as to how pups are allowed to be chosen for those that have deposits and we would feel terrible if someone was on the list maybe 4th in line, but then maybe that person wanted a female, but all of the females were chosen by 1st -3rd on the list! So the 4th person would have to wait for another litter or maybe adjust to having a boy (boys are AWESOME, but some people want a female sometimes and this is just a hypothetical). See how complicated it could get and how people could easily be disappointed? And I don’t want to be the person telling someone they don’t get a puppy until another time - who wants to deliver bad news? I sure don’t.
Our pups are available the minute they’re born - even if not on the website until 5 or 6 weeks later, we will send out pics of the newborns upon request so families can then make selections if they are ready to adopt.
We take many calls, texts and emails from people planning ahead for a pup maybe in a year or so - we give them an idea of when we might have pups in that window and encourage them to reach out often to us to check in to see if anything has changed. We love these calls, and we’ve been asked (and even begged) sometimes to take a deposit, but we refuse knowing this person may go to another breeder that will take a deposit. But we’re ok with this, because we just not comfortable doing it!
So, if you would love a stunningly beautiful Bernedoodle that is known for his or her sweet, sweet personality and health, please call or text Julia at 843-478-0664 and she will help you walk through the adoption process, along with helping you find the Bernedoodle puppy that meets your lifestyle needs!
We would love to hear from you, even if it’s just to chat and learn about Bernedoodles!
